I came across the following on a Sarah Palin forum 18 days ago and in a moment I will tell you why I am commenting on it today:

How one CEO has decided to handle layoffs...

Fellow Business Executives:

As the CEO of a business that employs 40 people, I have resigned myself to the fact that if Barack Obama becomes our next President, then our taxes and government fees will increase in a BIG way.

To compensate for these increases, I figure that our clients will have to see an increase in our fees to them of about 8% but since we cannot increase our fees right now due to the state of our economy, we will have to lay off six of our employees instead. This has really been eating at me for a while, as we believe we are family here and I didn’t know how to choose who would have to go.

So, this is what I did. I strolled through our parking lot and found 8 Obama bumper stickers on our employees’ cars and have decided these folks will be the first to be laid off. I can’t think of a more fair way to approach this problem.

If you have a better idea, let me know.

Now there were no links to other sources so I just let this go as another Internet urban legend, when apropos, last night I'm watching Boston Legal, Season 5, Episode 509, "Kill, Baby, Kill!" and the very same theme is covered: Alan Shore agrees to help a woman who claims she was fired for voting for John McCain for President.

At the hearing for injunctive relief the judge rightly ruled that at-will employers can fire anyone for any reason provided they do not violate Federal Laws Prohibiting Job Discrimination; being fired for holding certain political opinions is not a violation of discrimination laws. It is interesting to note that the show's writers, blazing liberals all, could not allow the worker to be fired for being stupid enough to vote for Obama, which would have been believable, but had to script the employee being fired because she was just plain stupid for voting for McCain for the wrong reasons.

As it happens I have fired workers for smoking cigarettes and I certainly will not hire anyone who smokes, not just on the job but at all. In the same manner I certainly will not hire anyone who voted for Obama.

As for workers who already work for me, if I had to fire 6 workers I would look at the easiest jobs to replace and fire the least productive Obama-voting workers first. If I didn't need to fire anyone I wouldn't fire them just because they voted for Obama, but certainly they would be on my short list the moment Obama pressed for some law to be passed that would screw my company.

People who vote should realize there are consequences. Getting fired because the man they picked damages the economy is one of those consequences. The youth in France cannot get work precisely because they voted against giving the employer the right to fire even for cause. Consequences - be careful what you vote for.

As for preemptive firing, some businesses may be not only justified for doing so, but be strategically saving the jobs of those who remain, especially if there is a lag time between production and sales. Sadly, car manufacturers cannot fire every single worthless union worker because they are not allowed to; a position I would never be in since I would never hire a union worker in the first place.

The greatest job creating engine in the world is the American small business owner who can fire for any cause, good or bad. That's why we succeed better than any other nation because we are not stuck with our workers, for proof see the failure of the Big 3 automakers.

To those who argue that the workers are merely expressing harmless opinion which should not affect their work, we should recall that workers in Russia expressed their opinion in 1917 and both employers and workers paid for that opinion in blood.

Work is a two way street. I cannot do everything, that is why I hired workers. I have to fill out thousands of forms and comply with and pay the following taxes: state gross receipts, federal unemployment tax, state unemployment tax, state excise tax, telecommunication relay service, local number portability, income tax withholding, gross receipts tax, federal income tax withholding, universal service fund, excise taxes, gasoline tax,tax franchise, tax payroll, new york 911,franchise fee, state income tax, federal telecom, social security and medicare, federal income tax, and on and on. This is only a partial list, for the rest go here.

I buy products, sell them, collect what's owed to me, take the entire loss if I get stiffed, worry about paying the rent, utilities, and suppliers. I get lawsuits because some idiot tripped on a sidewalk a mile away but I'm the nearest guy worthy of suing. I lose money directly for every shoplifted item, employee theft, credit card charge-back and return of product because the customer wore it once and now wants a refund just because they can get away with it.

If my workers want me to stay in business and continue to pay their wages, they have to be on my side; not vote for more taxes on my business, not to share MY wealth, not to raise the FICA payroll taxes on workers making them even more uncompetitive with overseas workers. Why do you think so many companies moved out of this country? Exactly because we have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world behind Japan.

Luckily for America the Japanese shot themselves in the foot. Back in the 1980s the Japanese were poised to become an economic Superpower. The same disease ailing Detroit automakers for years finally cooled down the Japanese expansion and brought them to a standstill in the 1990s: life-time employment for workers, government subsidies to help support that employment, refusing to let failing companies go bankrupt, and the highest corporate taxes on Earth. As GM has learned, you can only coast so far on the momentum of the past.

I expect my workers to vote for the most Capitalist, free market politicians possible. If they don't then I have the right to treat them the same way I would saboteurs.

Besides, Obama promised to take care of the downtrodden and unemployed so why should they worry?
